Dave DeLong : (Hurdles Coach)
Head Girls Coach
Coach DeLong has been coaching for 23 years, 21 of them at Canyon High School and 2 years at Burroughs High School in Burbank, CA. He began his running career in high school running a 4:17 in the 1600m, then in college running a 14:55 in the 5,000m and a 4:10 in the 1600m. He attended USC and graduated from Point Loma Nazarene College in 1984. From there he began his first teaching job at Jordan Jr. High in Burbank, CA, then 2 years at Burroughs High School, and has spent the last 20 years teaching math at Canyon High School. He has competed in several marathons, with a PR at age 35 of 2:54. He placed 100 th at the Boston Marathon in 1996.
He’s been married to his wife Lisa for 24 years and has 3 children; Jessica, Joelle, and Jacob. In his spare time, you can find him in the Jacuzzi, playing golf, or spending time with his family or alumni runners. You may find him screaming for more ice-cream as he watches his favorite movie “It’s A Beautiful Life.”
Paul Broneer: (Jumps Coach)
Head Boys Coach
Coach Broneer has been coaching a variety of sports for 30+ years. Along with coaching he has been a teacher after receiving his degree from UCLA and his master’s degree in Computer Education from USIU. He has taught and coached at Burroughs High School for 4 years, Glendale High School for 17 and has spent the last 15 years at Canyon High School. In high school he was on the "all time top 10" U.S. high school decathlon list. He competed as a Triple Jumper & Decathlete at UCLA in 1967. He has competed in about 10 marathons. He also was 17th in the U.S. Olympic trials in the decathlon in 1968. (Coach Broneer has been around so long that he coached Coach DeLong in Jr. High Track.)
He has been married to his wife Jan for 39 years and has 2 children; Eric and Jaimie, along with grandchildren Benjamin (8), Emma (6) and Ava Maureen (3) William Paul (1) Claire Elizabeth (6 mo.) and Charles Anthony (2 mo). In his spare time he tries to play golf, play with his grandchildren, cheer on the UCLA Bruins. He tries to find time to take long walks with his wife, Jan, ride a bike, and go fishing.
His favorite movie is “Finding Nemo”. Paul and his wife Jan were inducted into the Burbank City Sports "Walk of Fame." in 2006.
Vicki Goodwin : (Distance Coach)

Coach Goodwin has been coaching for six years and has begun her sixth year of teaching at Canyon High School. She attended Canyon and ran cross country and track. She earned her BA in English and History from Westmont College and did her graduate work in Irvine. She also ran cross country and track during college.
When she’s not at practice or attending a race she likes to spend time with her family and friends. She enjoys reading and playing the piano. Activities outdoors are her favorite, like camping and hiking. She is a Tom Hanks fan so “Turner and Hooch” and “Forrest Gump” are her favorite movies, just to name a few. She enjoys eating food that involves any form of noodles and/or tortillas.
Chris Jackson : (Distance Coach)

Coach Jackson has been coaching for four years. He has been teaching math at Canyon High School for three years and
had taught one year at Newton Middle School. He earned his B.A. degree from Point Loma Nazarene University and his
M. Div. from Princeton Seminary. He attended Morro Bay High School, were he ran for the cross country team and has
been running on his own since. He has been married to Samantha since July 2003. He enjoys reading and playing games
when he’s not grading papers or off to a race. His favorite movie is “Matrix” and LOVES chocolate.
George Velarde : (Distance Coach)
Assistant Coach
Coach Velarde has been coaching for 13 years. The previous nine years he was head coach at Mission Bay High School in San Diego, CA. He began teaching P.E. at Pacific Beach Middle School in San Diego, CA. and was there for 7 years. Then taught at Jordan Middle School in Burbank, CA. for one year. He is the Department Chair for P.E. at Sierra Vista Junior High. He graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 1994 with a BA in Athletic Training and completed his Master’s Degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific University in 2002. Some of his best times were 14:59 for 3 miles; 26:22 for 5 miles and 32:20 for a 10k at PLNU.
He and his wife of 10 years, Erica, have two sons, Jacob (6) and Jayson (3). He enjoys playing basketball, watching Sports Center and cheering for the LA Lakers and the NY Yankees. His favorite movie is “Star Wars”. His favorite food is lasagna.
Joe Stasen : (Sprint Coach)
Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. Moved to California in 2001. Married to Shandi Jamison in 2005. Attended
Arcadia Univerity in Philadelphia. Bachelors degree in Biology, minor in Physical Therapy and Masters in Secondary
Science Education. Competed in wrestling, ice hockey, and track and field. Have been teaching biology and coaching
track at Canyon High School for 6 years. Favoirte movie is Usual Suspects, favorite food is sushi. Huge Philadelphia
Eagles fan.

A man of few words. Last year, Kent was Canyon's Teacher of the Year!

Cecil Hammock: (Throws Coach)
Cecil was born in Buffalo, NY, then moved to Michigan, and finally to Pomona California where
he attended Gary High School. He played football (Wide receiver and safety) and competed on
the track team. He pole vaulted 11-6 with an aluminum pole and landed in sawdust with a dirt
runway. He also ran a 49.0 440 yard dash! Cecil played football for the famous coach Duffy Doherty
at Michigan State for one season, then went pro playing for the Lancing (Michigan) Allstars for 4 1/2
seasons. He later worked as a School Police officer for the Inglewood School District and later the
LA County Safety Police and Sherrifs Department. He began coaching in 1973 when his oldest son,
Cecil Jr. started playing Football and running track. He coached the LA Jets Track Club and was the
president for 5 years. From 1995 until 2001, Cecil was the throws coach at Morningside High School.
Cecil and his wife Cheryl of 33 years have 4 children: Kiana31, Cecil Jr. 27, Joshua 24, and Jonathan 18,
a senior and an up and coming quarter miler like his dad. Cecil keeps it no secret that he "Loves the Lord!"

Frank Rock: (Pole Vault coach)
Frank grew up in Santa Clarita and competed in track (pv, lj and hj) at Placerita Jr. High and Hart High School.
(School Record 1968 - 14'0:4th place CIF: 8th place Cal State Meet 1968). Frank Majored in Police Science at
Glendale College - Competed in Pole Vault (1969 and 1970). WSC Champion both years. School Record
1970 - 15'6"; 5th place Cal JC State Meet). Transferred to San Jose State University. Majored in Criminal
Justice Administration - BS 1973. Competed In Pole Vault and Decathlon (16'6", 6394. PCAA Champion 1973.
NCAA 5th place @ 16'0". AAU(now TAC) 6th place @16'6". Ranked 8th in the nation by T&F News for 1973.
Competed in club track (Beverly Hills Striders and Maccabi Union) for 5 years. Cleared 17'0" @ 1974 MT. SAC
RELAYS. Made the world list that year. Have coached track at COC, Boise State University and Burbank H/S
before coming to Canyon in 1989. This is my 21st Cowboy team. I am married to my college sweetheart Carol
(33 years) and have gradutated 3 children from Canyon: Sarah '98; Kerry '00 and Casey Jane '05. I am
a crew member at Trader Joe's and a chalk artist/muralist. My artwork is currently on many walls across the SCV.
And lastly I am also into community theatre. I am on the board of directors for the Canyon Theatre Guild where
we have been members for 15 years. Frank is also aa leading authority/lecturer on the history of the St. Francis
Dam disaster of 1928.
Bob Plassmeyer: (Hurdle Coach)
Bob retired from LAPD as a sergeant in 1992. He ran track on the LAPD track team and held the State record for the
senior 110 Meter high hurdlers at 16.1. Bob was a high school track starter for 34 years, retiring in 2008.
Bob has been married for 48 years and keeps active with his church and 4 grand children ages 17,14,12, and10.
