The Signal chose to cover the Saugus vs Valencia meet, but did mention that our Boys were champs.
Erik Boal and The Daily News tells us that our girls actually Tie for 2nd in league with Valencia and WR.

What a meet!  Our Girls Varsity pulled out a 2 point win!  The coaches had anticipated
being 28 point underdogs, but it was closer than we thought.  Gillian Lopez won the vault
and then jumped a PR in the long jump on her final attempt (15-7) to edge Isabelle Howell from
West Ranch who jumped 15-4. Keeli Howard won the 100 in 12.1 and 200 in 26.1.  Taylor
Thomas won both hurdle races 14.9 and 49.3. Tiffini Stone won the LJ 16-9.75 and TJ 34-7.5.
Monique Grijalva and Sara Ward went 1-2 in the high jump.  When we left the meet, the coaches
thought that the girls had tied 68-68.  We later learned that Janice Walker took a key 3rd place
in the discus to give us the victory!

The Boys Varsity got some PRs in the sprints and hurdles, but suffered in the distance races
due to heavy winds. Darius Rudolph clocked a wind aided 10.6 100 meters, and Kenneth Stone ran 22.3 in
the 200. Tommy Mc Guan won the 1600 and 3200 while Shane Habberstad won the 300 Hurdles
and Long Jump.  Canyon won every field event sweeping the high jump.

Meet Records  RESULTS PHOTOS
Boys Varsity Won 105-31
Boys FS Won 95-41
Girls JV Won 82-54
but our Girls Varsity lost 80-56

The girls meet should be quite a contest.  Here are some of the top match-ups.
Sprints: Faith Anumba 12.4 and Jasmine Hall 25.79 and 60.0 vs Keeli Howard 12.6, 26.8, 61.9 (boy will she be tired!)
Taylor Thomas and Keeli went 1-2 in the 100 at 12.9 and 13.0
Hurdles: Jasmine Hall 15.8 and Jasmin Perkins 16.3 and 49.7 vs Taylor Thomas 15.27 and 46.5
Taylor won both Hurdle races in 15.5 and 48.1 and Bethany Barker took third in both races.
Distance: Linnea Herren 2:22 and Sarah Adams 11:26 vs Jessica Gatton
Casey Cass scored the only distance point for Canyon with her 12:40 3200 time.
Jumps: Jasmine Hall 5-6, Faith Anumba 5-2, 17-9 and Quintiara Walker 32-3 vs Tiffini Stone 17-0, 33-11,
Brittany Cervaro 15-7, 32-5, and Monique Grijalva 4-10
Monique was sick and didn't compete, Tiffini won the triple jump at 33-9 and placed second in the long jump at 16-5
Vault: Gillian Lopez 10-8, Stevie Kennedy-Gold 9-6 and Erika Sardella 9-0 vs Karlie Gross 8-0
We swept the vault (again!)

Kelsey Parrish had a big PR and placed second in the shot 29-4.5 and Walker placed second in the discus 86-4 and 3rd in the shot 27-9
Relays: 4x100 Canyon 49.8 vs Valencia ???  4x400 Valencia 4:08.9 vs Canyon 4:11.3
Valencia won both relays

Note: Jasmine Hall (their best athlete) injured her knee in the Arcadia Invitational.  We are not sure if she will compete.

The boys meet should also have some interesting match-ups:
800 meters Falco Digiallonardo 1:58.6, Jack Kowal 1:59.85 Andrew Mayeda 2:00.83 and Malcolm Flowers 2:01.6
vs James Rutherford 2:00.11, Nate Taylor 2:01.7, Michel Noris 2:03r, and Steven Dreiger 2:03r.

also 1-2 in the 3200 with a MEET RECORD 9:53.2 by Tyler Tockstein (old record was 9:54.3 by Steven Kent in 2007)
Tommy Mc Guan pased Tyler and took second in 10.00.
Hurdles: Andre Beets 15.8 vs Edmond Darko 15.8

Darko beak Beets by a 10th in the Highs 15.9 to 16.0 but Beets won the 300s in 43.0.
Pole Vault: Joe Pineda 13-0 vs Colton Berkery 13-0, Andrew Crane 12-6, andrew Carillo 12-6

Pineda places 3rd in the vault in 12-6

Note: We have few marks for Valencia Boys in the sprints, jumps, or throws.  As it appears, Canyon should dominate
those events. Canyon went 1-2-3 in the 100, 200, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put and Discus Throw
as expected. Thats 45-0 ! in those 5 events.  Great Job by our Sprinters and Field event athletes!
Note: Ricky Bergeron threw the Discus 152-10 to break his own MEET RECORD by 15 feet!

Alumni Update: Adam Mc Donald

Author and Runner Matt McCue
Ran and talked to the team today, Wed April 14th at 2:15 pm. Matt's book,  An Honorable Run, is a must read
for every kind of athlete and coach. It's a poignant runner's coming-of-age story that explores the relationship
between McCue and his high  school coach, the late Bob Brown, as well as with Mark Wetmore of University of
Colorado famed and a perennial Big 12 coach-of-the-year. But this little 150 page book is about a lot more than
running. It delves into the questions of what it means to be a success and of what it means to be of good
character. McCue tells his tale of personal challenges and running  challenges in a well written and
inspirational fashion. After Matt's talk, I think we left more inspired than ever to achieve great things in running
and our personal life.  Read more about Matt and his book, including excerpts here at his web site.

(You can also order the book for $15.00 plus shipping. It only took 3 days to get my book. Coach Broneer)

Foothill Boys Preview and Girls Preview by Joey Gulino

Foothill League Begins: Saugus at Canyon  MEET RECORDS and HISTORY
Meet Preview: Saugus Boys have a 2 meet win streak which we will attempt to break this Thursday!
Since 1990 Canyon has beat the Saugus Boys 18 times. The Daily News has Canyon ranked 3rd and
Saugus 6th in the area. Golden Valley is the only other team ranked in the pre-season Pole.
Darius Rudoph (10.9) , Cody Moore (11.0), Shane Habberstad (11.2)  and Kenny Stone (11.0) will lead a strong
sprint core.  Saugus top sprinter, Jawhar Purdy has run 11.4.  There should be some
close matchups in the distances as Michel Noris, Tommy Mc Guan, and Nate Taylor take on Alec Nelson
and Alex Ruther
.  Saugus Daniel Whitham has the top marks in the throws (54-2 and 146-1) and will test
Nate Wolitarski (48-0, 133-3), Dylan Kawaa (45-4, 116-11) and Ricky Bergeron (40-9, 140-1).  Saugus' Ian Engle (19-7)
will battle Canyon's Cody Moore (19-11.5) and Shane Habberstad (19-7) in the Long Jump.  Perhaps the tightest
competion could come in the Pole Vault when Canyon's Joe Pineda takes on Landon Shaw.   The Hurdles could
be a pivotal event with Canyon's Habberstad, Soph Andre Beets and Josh Roper take on Saugus Kyle Mears.

Saugus Girls are the top ranked team (#2) with West Ranch (#3) and Canyon (#9).  Some early season injuries to our
distance team will give Saugus a clear advantage. One of the top distance teams in the country should dominate those
events, however the sprints, hurdles, and field events could prove to be the strength of the Cowboys.  Brittany Cervaro and Tiffini Stone will battle Saugus Christie Edwards in the horizontal jumps.  Taylor Thomas should be the favorite in the hurdles with Saugus
Monica Allen not far behind. Alex Ecsedy is the clear favorite in the throws with the loss of Mariah Mewborn due to
academic ineligibility. Gillian Lopez, Stevie Kennedy-Gold and Erika Sardella have the top 3 Pole Vault marks in the league.
Amber Wright returns for Saugus in the sprints.

2010 Field and Track Season Preview
Boys: We lost to Saugus and placed 2nd in League last year. Gone
are League Champions Anthony Pizzo (3200) and Harrison Hall (TJ) but
we have an experienced team returning.
Field Events: Our throwers are looking strong this season. Nate Wolitarski
was last years FS League Champion in the Shot 51-9 and Discus at 135-1. Backing
him up are Dylan Kawa 48-0 and Ricky Bergeron 142-5. Kevin Enge was also a
FS League Champ in the high jump. He has recently cleared 6-4. Cody Moore
jumped 6-6 this summer and is our top returning triple jumper at 41-5.
Shane Habberstad returns in the LJ at 20-5 along with Kenny Stone LJ 19-9.
Joe Pineda
returns in the Pole Vault with a best of 12-0.
Sprints: Darius Rudolf 10.9, Cody Moore 11.1, and Shane Habberstad return
from our outstanding 42.9 sprint relay team. Kenny Stone is bigger and stronger and should
add depth to our sprint group.
Distance: Tommy McGuan 9:46, Michel Noris 4:31, Nate Taylor 2:02, and Sam
Willis
will give us strength and depth in the distance races.
Hurdles: Shane Habberstad returns in the 300 hurdles at 41.5. Backing up Shane
will be Jeff Curtis 15.6 and FS League Champ Andre Beets 16.0.

Girls: Last year the girls were 6-1, also losing to Saugus. We hope to improve on
this record this year. Courtney Saunders (school record holder in DT 130-9) and SP 39-2
graduated, but the good news is, she was the only senior on last years Honor Roll. We did
lose Layana White 100 12.6, HJ 5-4 to transfer.
Field Events: Double League Champion and School Record holder Tiffini Stone
18-1 LJ and 34-0 TJ will lead and outstanding group of jumpers and throwers.
The Vault could be our strongest event as we return Jillian Lopez 10-6, Stevie
Kennedy-Gold
10-0 and Erika Sardella 8-6. Sara Ward 4-10 HJ, Brittany Cervero
32-9 TJ will add depth. The throwers are led by Mariah Mewborn 30-5 SP and
123-9 DT.
Sprints: Keeli Howard 26.7 200, and Taylor Thomas 58.5 400, and Adriana Dent
200 26.8 return from last years outstanding sprint relay team 49.5.
Distance: Alyssa Selve 2:25 800, 5:17 1600 and Hayley Parkinson 11:24 3200 lead
a experienced group of distance runners.
Hurdles: Double League Champion Taylor Thomas returns in the 100 H at 15.0
and 300 H at 45.19. She will be backed up by Bethanie Barker 50.5 300H.

missed the podium by an inch!! But I got 4th in a super deep conference in the throws
and we majorly upscored in the event so we're in contention to win another title. Just
thought I would fill you in. Hope things are going well in SoCal!"
